mini, helps

As mentioned, I've been behind on the crafting.  But, I've managed to do some mini projects:

I picked up some mini glass candle holders/planters/i-don't-know-but-they-were-cute/ things at some point and painted them using Martha's all-purpose craft paint in pink and gold.

I made more cards/postcards - these were with stamps and craft chalk.

I screen printed a shirt for the boy with  his home state of Arizona and a little cactus cut out around Phoenix.

I sewed a utensil pouch to match my sandwich wrapper.  I keep a fork and spoon at the office, and now they have a nicer place to live than just in the drawer. and it's seersucker, so it's extra classy.

i do love a mini project, finishing something in a couple of hours is so rewarding.

keep crafting it up!

shark week

Well, for starters, it's shark week, so it's only appropriate to have a related post.
Now, to be fair, this item was crafted a long time ago, but for some reason is just now getting posted (perhaps because I was waiting for shark week, but that's really unlikely)

Anyway, Jonathan requested a toiletries bag.  aka a pouch.
You should know by now that is basically all ashley and i ever make, so it worked out well.

I went to the fabric store to get some especially ridiculous fabric. I was really hoping for some superhero but there was none to be had. Jonathan voted sharks over spaceships so I got to work.

Supplies:
Fabric
Interfacing
Plastic,  I just used the same material I had leftover from the sandwich pouches, obvi.

What else?
Oh a zipper, thread, machine, and cutting mat; rotary cutter if you have it
(i'm currently obsessed with mine)

What to do:
So, to get started cut two pieces of fabric, two pieces of interfacing, and one piece of plastic to the same size. The fabric should be an extra 1/4 inch-wide around.

Cut to whatever size you would like your pouch to be.  I was making a small one so I think I did 10x12. You will need about an inch on either side of the zipper.

Apply interfacing to wrong side of fabric (follow your directions)

Then, line up your pieces so you have the fabric side on bottom (with right-side up), followed by the plastic, and then topped with the other fabric piece facing the wrong-side up.

Then sew up the two long sides together and flip rightside out:

Next pin the zipper in and sew:

Flip inside out again and sew up the sides, and then the other side of the zipper into the last open side:

I had to finish the last inch of the zipper by hand since it was so thick with the double fabric and plastic

Ta-da!

ready to be on the go!

so many pouches, of course

So Ashley has a sandwich pouch. You know, a reusable sandwich wrapper.  So we had to craft some up for the rest of us.  How do you do it?

Well you need a piece of fabric and a piece of liner.  The fabric can be anything, but should be cut to about a 12-14 inch square.  The liner should be plastic, but the thinner the better.  Remember this will keep all those good sandwich juices in the wrap, and make for easy cleanup.  Oh, also cut it to the same sized square as your fabric.

I went with red seersucker and a ladybug plastic.  Because it's so cute. Take your two pieces of fabric and fold it in half twice so you have a smaller square and then cut off the corner, just a couple of inches so that when you unfold it, it looks like this:

Check plus.  Now pin it up, right-side out.  Take it to the machine and sew it up all around, like so:

Then grab those pinking shears and trim it up:

Oh yeah and then when that is all said and done sew some velcro on - one piece on the inside and one on the outside, across from each other.

And now you are ready to throw a sandwich in there and wrap it up!

Yeah, Shira got the pink one and Casey got the dinosaurs, obvi.
